What is a Giclée?

Giclée is the name for the process of making fine art prints from a digital source using ink jet printing. The word "giclée" is derived from the French language word "le gicleur" meaning "nozzle", or more specifically "gicler" meaning "to squirt, spurt, or spray". Recently fine art production has be revolutionized by Giclée fine art printing. Specialty inks have been developed to provide better color accuracy, expanded color gamut and provide a longer life to the print. Giclée printing is generally more affordable than lithographs and allow for small print runs at a higher quality.

What is the advantage of Giclée printing compared to other art reproduction methods?

Giclée prints are superior to the traditional lithography technique in many ways. The colors are brighter, the resolution is higher, details are crisper and the prints last longer. Another main advantage to Giclée printing is the ability to have smaller print runs. Lithograph and silk-screen techniques require a large print run, usually of at least a 1000 to make it practical.

Can I print files from my digital camera?

Yes, we recommend around a 6-15 megapixel camera to produce quality large prints. Feel free to contact us with your image if you need to know how big it is able to be printed.

Will the print colors be exactly what I see on my computer monitor?

No. As colors vary from monitor to monitor. A computer monitor also uses RBG color, and is backlit. What you see is called additive color. Paper however uses subtractive color. We calibrate our system to ensure the best possible color range.

If you have doubts about how the color will look, it is advised that you order a proof.
